Hard Fought Win For 2nds

Kenfig Hill 2nds returned to winning ways with a hard fought win over Nantyffyllon at Croft Goch on Saturday. The Kenfig Hill backline was bolstered with the late arrival of several youth players whose match in Cornelly was a late postponement due to a waterlogged pitch. Although Nanty pressured Kenfig Hill from the kick off with several turnovers it was Kenfig Hill who scored first centre Dale Smith kicking upfield and returning full back Michael Rawnson showing that he had lost none of his pace over the past month out as he outstriped the Nanty defence to hack the ball on, which then held up in the mud over the line for him to touch down near the corner. The conversion was missed out wide though. There were no further scores in the first half although it was Nanty who had most possession with numerous turnovers but they couldn't turn the pressure into points as they missed a penalty to close the gap. Moving into the 2nd half then Kenfig Hill gradually began to have the best of the possession and territory as they went close on a number of occasions to increase their lead. The Kenfig Hill scrum which was under pressure in the first half also started to exert some dominance led by the front row of Lloyd Jenkins, Joe Williams and Lee Williams. However, it was captain Dan Shaddis playing out of position in the centre who finally side stepped his way over under the posts for his 5th try in the last three games with Shaun Evans adding the conversion. Kenfig Hill continued to press for more scores in the final 15 minutes but couldn't force their way with Nanty's defence holding firm. Kenfig Hill travel to Nantyffyllon in three weeks time for an Enoch-Lewis cup semi-final for what promises to be another tight game.
