Big Win at Maesteg Quins

The Mules and Maesteg Quins went into the match looking for much sought after points as they both try to avoid relegation into Division 2.
The Quins played the first half with a strong wind at their back and dominated the first 40 minutes scoring 4 unanswered tries in the process. The Quins eight showed more aggression and strength at the breakdown than their younger counterparts with the Mules only getting into their opponents 22 on a few occasions. Any chances the Mules had of crossing the whitewash were thwarted by the Quins strong defence and poor decision making by the Mules in broken play. The Quins led 24-0 at half time.

The second half was a totally different affair with at last the Mules backline choosing the right options in attack and slowly they clawed their way back into the game.
Also the Mules discipline was faultless in the 2nd half with barely a penalty conceded. The Maesteg eight started to tire as the game continued to be played at a fast pace.

Tries for Kenfig Hill were scored by dogged flanker Scott Waller and a brace from winger Ben Clarke. Nicky Giles added the conversions which brought the score to 24 21 with 5 minutes to play. The Mules continued to move the ball at every occasion and after another flowing passage of play, replacement prop Matthew Tame was on hand to run in unopposed from 20 metres to put the Mules into the lead for the first time in the match. The conversion was missed but the Mules controlled the game for the final few minutes to run out winners 26 24.

Factors the aided the win were a strong bench with Connor O’Connell, Jon Thomas and Matthew Tame all catching the eye and a great spirit from the entire squad.

The win means that Kenfig Hill need 1 more point from their remaining 2 matches to guarantee another season in Division 1 West Central with 5 teams still in the relegation fight.
