Kenfig Hill 51 Bonymaen 12

Kenfig Hill completed their league program with a vital and well deserved bonus point victory against Bonymaen in the sunshine at Croft Goch. The win ensured another season in Division One West Central for The Mules which had been in doubt for a number of weeks due to too many inconsistent performances.

However, the spirit of the team has never been in doubt and this was evident in today’s encounter. The Mules dominated a young Bonymaen fifteen from the outset and scored some excellent tries in the process. It was pleasing to see fly half Nicky Giles back to his running best giving a virtuosos performance in the first half including a run in from 70 meters.

Bonymaen played their part with a strong driving maul but the Mules held the edge with their running rugby aided by a firm pitch. Tries were scored at regular intervals with the highlight in the 80th minute when second row and ex Muler Ben Jones, who was on permit from Aberavon, burst through a tiring Bonymaen defence to hand the ball to his brother Dan as he crossed the line.

In fact, there were 5 sets of brothers involved in the day. Shaun and Matthew Burnell occupied the centre berths accompanied by Ben & Dan Jones, prop Matthew Tame and hooker Jay Tame; Coach Daryl Harvey and hooker Gareth Harvey who was on dual from Aberavon and Coach Ryan Giles and outside half Nicky Giles.

Thanks also to another ex Muler winger Lewis Morgan who played on permit from Maesteg and helped himself to brace of tries.

This has been stressful season for players, supporters and coaches alike and Head Coach Paul Yardley has probably aged 10 years in the process. However there is enough potential in the club to have a very successful team with an abundance of youthful talent who if they stick at it and support the coaching staff will improve year on year.
