2nds first outing of the season

Kenfig Hill 2nds finally made their first outing of the season with an away match to Porthcawl in the Enoch-Lewis Cup. Having won the cup for the last 3years then Kenfig Hill were looking to make a strong start to their campaign with several players from last years youth side making their debut including Connor Hick and Ethan Jenkins. However, Kenfig Hill were rusty in the early stages and could only manage a first half penalty from full back Shaun Evans to make it 3-0 at half time. With Kenfig Hill losing a couple of players to injury then they only had a bare 15 players for the 2nd half. It was Porthcawl who took the lead straight from the kick off though as some slack tackling allowed their second row to make ground before passing to score under the posts. Porthcawl were putting pressure on Kenfig Hill and scored another couple of penalties to move 13-3 up with 20minutes remaining. This seemed to spur Kenfig Hill into life as they spent most of the remaining game in the Porthcawl half and they eventually scored a try in the corner which was uncoverted to leave them still trailing 13-8 with 10minutes remaining. After sustained pressure from a couple of lineouts and scrums then eventually Kenfig Hill scored another try in the corner which was again uncoverted, although at 13-13 then Kenfig Hill were going through on try count. Kenfig Hill  managed to withstand some late pressure from Porthcawl to hold on for the draw and go through to the 2nd round. There were some excellent performances from the youth debutants with Connor Hick picking up the man of the match award and Josh Rowlands, Matthew Howe and Lewis Rees also having excellent games. Hopefully Kenfig Hill 2nds will now have some regular fixtures and a core set of committed players with which to look forward to for the rest of the season.
