Kenfig Hill 2nds made a stunning 2nd half comeback from 16-5 down to retain the Enoch-Lewis cup 16-22 at a sunny but cold Cefn Athletic ground. Both sides fielded strong squads with a chance of sliverware on offer for the winners. Bridgend Athletic started more strongly putting pressure on the Kenfig Hill scrum and were more agressive in the tackling and around the park. They moved 7-0 in front after an accidental collision between Dale Smith and Jac Briggs following a high ball led to a score under the posts. Brigend Athletic moved further in front with a penalty as indiscipline by Kenfig Hill was penalised. Captain Dan Shaddis finally went over for Kenfig Hill after a drive from a lineout to bring the score back to 10-5. Kenfig Hill thought they had moved in front as the referee awarded a penalty try as the Brigend Athletic scrum came under pressure from Kenfig Hill front of Joe Williams, Chris Leyshon and Gerwyn Stone. However, the linesman called play back for a technical infringement. This looked like it would cost Kenfig Hill dearly as Brigend Athletic immediately went upfield and scored another penalty to move 13-5 in front at half time. More indiscipline from Kenfig Hill after the break saw Brigend Athletic move 16-5 in front with another penalty. However, Kenfig Hill then took control for the remainder of the game with their superior fitness as the Athletic pack tired and eventually saw them move to passive scrums. From such a scrum in the Kenfig Hill half then halfbacks Matthew Tossell and Nicky Giles moved the ball quickly to Connor O'Connell who went through a gap and put fellow centre Curtis Kerton in under the posts to bring the score back to 16-12. The Kenfig Hill back row of Kyle Davies, Jacob David and Ryan Jenkins began to make ground off scrums and were playing mostly in the Athletic half. From a period of sustained pressure then scrum half and man of the match Matthew Tossell went through the tiring defence to score under the posts as Kenfig Hill moved in front for the first time in the game. Kenfig Hill brought on several substitutes as they moved further in front with a penalty from fly half Nicky Giles and easily saw out the game in the Athletic half to make the final score 16-22. Thanks to all players, first aiders, supporters and especially team manager Gareth Russell who have followed the 2nds on another successful season.
